Hi neighbors—Mia Miller here, sharing some of the best things to do outdoors in Glenwood Springs. Whether you’re craving a mellow trail, a riverside stroll, or a picnic under the sky, there are plenty of spots nearby that never lose their magic.
Top Hikes & Trails
Hanging Lake Trail
This classic hike rewards you with a captivating turquoise lake perched above Glenwood Canyon. It’s steep and regulated—permits are required year-round, and access rules (especially during summer) ensure the trail stays safe and beautiful.
Doc Holliday Grave Trail
A short out-and-back trail winding up to Linwood Cemetery, where you’ll find the grave of John “Doc” Holliday and Kid Curry. A gentle climb and views over town make this perfect for a lighter hike or family outing. On-leash dogs welcome.
Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail
Stretching about 14 miles one way, this mostly paved trail follows the Colorado River through dramatic canyon scenery. Ideal for biking, walking, or just enjoying peaceful moments by the water—with rest areas along the way for a picnic break or riverside sit-down.
Storm King Memorial Trail
Steeper terrain leads up to a memorial honoring the firefighters who lost their lives in the 1994 South Canyon Fire. The hike is rugged, but views and interpretive signage add weight and perspective to the journey.
Red Mountain & Scout Trail
For vistas high above town, these trails deliver. Red Mountain offers sweeping overlooks and the Scout Trail climbs toward Lookout Mountain, both offering big rewards for your effort.
Parks, Riverside Spots & Relaxation
Rio Grande Trail
This gentle, paved path follows the former Denver & Rio Grande Railroad through Roaring Fork Valley. It connects Glenwood Springs with communities like Aspen and is perfect for walking, biking, running, or just hanging out along the riverbank.
Wulfsohn Mountain Park
Right behind the Community Center, Wulfsohn offers a mix of easy trails, open terrain, and views—great for a quick escape without venturing far from town.
Betthel Plaza, Brush Creek, and Conservancy Parks
Some of our town’s favorite green spaces. Bettyle Plaza is great for casual strolls and people-watching. Brush Creek has playgrounds and picnic spots. Conservancy Park includes a gazebo and access to nearby trails. All ideal for relaxed afternoons.
Tips Before You Head Out
- Check trail status—closures or permit requirements change, especially on popular hikes like Hanging Lake.
- Weather can shift quickly, especially at higher elevations; bring layers, water, and sun protection.
- If bringing pets, confirm leash rules—many trails are dog-friendly only on leash.
- Leave no trace—pack out what you carry in, respect historic sites, and stay on designated paths.
Glenwood Springs gives us a wonderful mix—majestic landscapes and gentle retreats. Whether you have an hour or a full day, there’s always a spot waiting for you outdoors.
