Glenwood Springs’ Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Glenwood Springs’ Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Glenwood Springs, nestled at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork rivers, has long been a beacon of natural beauty. Recognizing the importance of preserving this environment, the city has undertaken significant initiatives to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Transition to Renewable Energy

In June 2019, Glenwood Springs became the seventh city in the nation to transition to 100% renewable electricity. This shift means that all municipal operations are powered by wind, hydroelectric, and solar energy sources, significantly reducing the city’s carbon footprint.

Energy and Climate Action Plan 2024

Building on its renewable energy commitment, the city adopted the Energy and Climate Action Plan in 2024. This comprehensive roadmap aims for a 60% reduction in emissions from municipal operations by 2035 compared to 2022 levels. The plan focuses on areas such as energy supply, building efficiency, waste management, transportation, and the preservation of parks and natural systems.

Three Mile Shoreline Restoration Project

Environmental conservation extends to the city’s waterways. The Three Mile Shoreline Restoration Project addressed severe degradation along the Roaring Fork River’s banks. Completed in 2024, the project involved revegetating approximately 30,000 square feet of riparian and wetland habitat, removing invasive species, and stabilizing 700 linear feet of eroded riverbank. These efforts have revitalized the area, enhancing both ecological health and recreational opportunities.

South Canyon Management Plan

In February 2024, the city adopted the South Canyon Management Plan, covering approximately 3,000 acres of city-owned land. This plan balances natural resource protection with recreational use, preserves cultural heritage, and addresses wildfire risks specific to the area. It consolidates multiple studies and recommendations, providing a clear vision for the sustainable management of South Canyon.

Community Engagement and RiverFest

Community involvement is a cornerstone of Glenwood Springs’ environmental efforts. The annual RiverFest, organized by the Glenwood Springs River Commission, exemplifies this commitment. Volunteers gather to clean up the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers, removing debris and promoting environmental stewardship. This event not only enhances the health of local waterways but also fosters a strong sense of community connection.

Through these initiatives and the active participation of its residents, Glenwood Springs continues to set a high standard for environmental sustainability, ensuring that its natural wonders are preserved for generations to come.
